What will I learn in a geophysics degree program?
Geophysics applies mathematical and physical principles to the study of the Earth and planets. Students will gain experience in the integrated application of geologic observations and geophysical measurements to the analysis of Earth science and related engineering problems using current, industry-standard computational and GIS tools.
Learning outcomes
Armed with an array of cutting-edge technologies and tactics, the geophysics program prides itself on bringing traditional classroom subjects, such as mathematics and physics, into the great outdoors. Hence its motto: "The earth is our laboratory." Geophysics applies mathematical and physical principles to the study of the Earth and planets.
Graduates of the bachelor's degree in geophysics are trained to:
- Understand the global properties of the Earth (gravity, magnetic field, crustal motions, interior dynamics)
- Use seismology, electromagnetics, potential fields, remote sensing, geodesy and GPS to explore the properties of the Earth
- Use current, industry-standard computational and GIS tools
- Explore Earth’s context in the solar system

The employment of geoscientists, including geophysicists, is projected to grow 7% from 2020 to 2030 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is as fast as the average for all occupations. With a median average salary of $83,680 in 2021, it is also a lucrative field to get into.
