Interested in the history and culture of Nevada, the Inquisition, the Middle East, Ancient Rome, Venice, the Aztecs, tourism in Hawai'i, the civil rights movement, or the Civil War? We have classes for that and so much more.
History majors may focus on different time periods and regions, but they develop research, critical thinking, writing and analytical skills while deepening their historical understanding. This critical analysis and our cutting edge programs, from digital history to museum studies, will prepare students to embark on an exciting career path.
We offer a wide array of undergraduate courses ranging from small, in-depth seminars to larger lecture classes to internships. Our history majors immerse themselves in primary research and scholarship, and then synthesize their ideas and arguments in various ways, including papers, projects, websites, exhibits and films. Our faculty have on-going relationships and collaborations with the Washoe County School District, the Nevada Museum of Art and research libraries and archives around the country. We also house the Shared History Program, Northern Nevada's premiere public and oral history program. As part of our dedication to widen university and public engagement, the Department of History hosts lectures, conferences and special events for scholars and the general public throughout the academic year.
Choose your electives from whichever courses spark your interest, while developing your skills in research, writing and critical analysis.
Areas of history to study include:
Students participating in the Public History specialization learn how to take the professional practice of history into a variety of career settings. Students in the program combine the study of history with coursework in allied skill sets, such as historic preservation, digital history, exhibit curation, museum-based education, journalism, documentary film production, and entrepreneurship. History coursework is paired with opportunities for hands-on professional training through internships and other forms of community engagement. The specialization can be combined with another minor to enhance career-specific training.
Political pundits, journalists and scholars frequently assert that “We live in an increasingly global society.” But what does it mean to live in a “global” society? And have the lives that we live actually become increasingly global over time? The global history specialization of the history B.A. offers students the historical tools to critically analyze past events and lives around the globe and to comprehend different viewpoints for understanding the connections among different parts and peoples of the world.
Discover how race, ethnicity and prejudice developed over time - and how people reshaped and challenged them.
Combine your love of history with training for a job in the classroom, all in four years.
The Department of History at the 夜色视频 also offers a minor in history, as well as a minor in African studies and Middle Eastern studies. Students will learn to think contextually, read historical documents and become better researchers and writers.
Historians can have many backgrounds, ranging from economic historians to those who study the historical contexts of environmental change. Historians may also specialize in social, political, intellectual, diplomatic and cultural experiences. Our history graduates have found jobs in teaching, city government, entertainment, finance, libraries, museums, NGOs, the military and the media. Some of them have used the history degree as a pre-law program in order to get into law school. Others have applied to graduate school in a range of fields, aiming to get M.A. and Ph.D. degrees to allow them to go into research and teaching. As one of our graduates put it, history majors, "train not for their first job out of college, but develop a set of skills that serve them for a lifetime, as employees and as citizens."
