The bachelor's degree in veterinary science is a four-year, pre-professional program that provides the academic background you need to apply to veterinary school.
Your coursework will focus on biological and natural sciences, and includes areas such as organic and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, anatomy and physiology, physics, microbiology, and animal nutrition. You'll also take general requirements including English, fine arts and more to round out your education and provide you with strong communication skills.
To help you succeed in the pre-veterinary program, you'll receive close advising from both professional advisors and our veterinary science faculty. You can also complete internships with veterinary practitioners to gain hands-on experience and help your chances of getting into veterinary school.
In the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources, you'll receive valuable hands-on experience that prepares you for a successful career in high-demand industries. With four departments and nearly 200 courses in agriculture, veterinary and rangeland sciences; biochemistry and molecular biology; natural resources and environmental science; and nutrition, we're ready to help you grow your future.
The pre-veterinary curriculum satisfies the entrance requirements of most schools in the United States offering a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Although not all graduates of the major in veterinary science go on to veterinary school, our graduates have a strong record of success in being accepted to programs including Texas A&M; Michigan State University; University of California, Davis; and many other schools around the nation.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects much faster than average job growth for veterinarians in the decade from 2020 to 2030, as pet owners increasingly seek medical care for their animals, and as the veterinary field advances in technology, enabling increasingly advanced health care services for animals.
The related field of veterinary technologists, which you can enter with a bachelor's degree and any required state licensure, is also expected to see strong job growth for similar reasons. Veterinary technologists are responsible for assisting veterinarians, and handle a lot of clinical care and laboratory tests, including taking x-rays and administering medications.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, veterinarians had a median annual salary of $100,370 in 2021.
