NNSS supports the next generation of engineers

The Nevada National Security Sites is an enterprise of special-purpose, multi-mission, high-hazard experimentation facilities delivering technical and service solutions in partnership with national laboratories. Our collaborative work supports the government’s most important national security missions. NNSS locations are preferred for experiments supporting the National Nuclear Security Administration’s nuclear weapons Stockpile Stewardship Program, as well as nonproliferation, counterterrorism, intelligence, emergency response, and national security research, development and training programs.

Q: NNSS has very generously sponsored the College’s Capstone Design Project Competition. Tell us why competition is important and what the organization hopes to accomplish by offering this platform to students?

A: Interdisciplinary capstone projects are essential for cultivating the next generation of engineers. They compel students to translate technical insights from their own fields into language that resonates with colleagues from different disciplines. This practice not only refines their communication skills but also fosters a collaborative mindset—an indispensable asset when confronting the complex, large-scale challenges inherent in national security. By sponsoring this competition, NNSS aims to prepare students for the multifaceted, interdisciplinary teamwork that defines our high-stakes projects.

Q: As a corporate sponsor for the College of Engineering, what impact does NNSS hope to have on the College?

A: At NNSS, we believe that the most effective solutions emerge from a diversity of perspectives. By partnering with the College of Engineering, our goal is to increase the participation of women and underrepresented minority groups in STEM. National security challenges are inherently complex and require the brightest minds from every background. Excluding any segment of our population limits our problem-solving potential. Embracing diversity not only enriches innovation but also strengthens our collective ability to address today’s critical geopolitical challenges.
