With a passion for both science and teaching, third-year family medicine resident, Taylor Thomas, M.D., returned to Reno and now serves as one of the 夜色视频 School of Medicine’s (UNR Med) chief residents. After earning her medical degree from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Thomas came back to her hometown to continue her training and give back to the community that helped shape her. She credits her interest in patient education, preventive care and building long-term relationships with guiding her path into family medicine and fueling her commitment to serving communities across Nevada.
What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine, and what drew you to your specialty?
“I have always been drawn to teaching and had a strong interest in science. As I progressed through my education, I realized that medicine would allow me to combine both passions by educating patients about their health. Family medicine, in particular, appealed to me because it allows me to care for patients across the lifespan, manage both acute and chronic conditions, and emphasize preventive care. I value empowering patients to actively participate in their own healthcare through education and long-term relationships."
What drew you to Reno and Northern Nevada for your training?
“I was born and raised in Reno, and after leaving for undergraduate studies and medical school, I felt a strong pull to return home. An added benefit was the strength of the Family Medicine Residency Program at UNR Med which made coming back an easy and meaningful decision."
How have your training experiences shaped you as a physician?
“My training at UNR Med and Renown Health has been comprehensive and well-rounded. I have had the opportunity to work closely with outstanding attendings, specialists, and medical students in a supportive learning environment. These experiences have not only strengthened my clinical skills but also inspired me to pursue a career in academic medicine and join the faculty after graduation."
How do you hope to make a difference for patients and communities across Nevada?
“As a future faculty member, I hope to inspire medical students and residents to pursue careers in primary care or other specialties and to consider staying and practicing in Nevada. By helping train the next generation of physicians, I aim to improve access to high-quality care for communities across the state.”
What advice would you give to medical students just beginning their training?
“Medical school can be challenging, and it is easy to lose sight of yourself along the way. I encourage students to prioritize activities and hobbies that bring them joy and help maintain balance. It is also important to remain open-minded throughout training, as you may discover passions in areas of medicine you did not initially expect.”
