The Reynolds School of Journalism has launched a new online certificate: . For students interested in the intersection of gaming, media and broadcasting, this nine-credit certificate is designed to complement students’ existing academic path.

As the competitive gaming industry grows, so does the need for media professionals with experience in streaming, sports announcing, social media communication and other emerging platforms.

“There is a growing demand for professionals who understand how esports audiences consume content,” said Dean Gi Woong Yun. “This certificate equips students with the skills to create and analyze esports content, preparing them for opportunities in a rapidly growing industry.”

The certificate helps students build skills in a range of areas, from sports announcing to content production and communications. The certificate consists of three courses — all offered completely online — from the Reynolds School. Journalism 271, Media Approaches to Esports and Gaming, examines esports history, gaming communities and media coverage. Journalism 304, Social Media and Society, explores online behavior, audience engagement and digital communication. Journalism 372, Sports Announcing and Broadcasting, introduces play-by-play announcing, commentary, analysis and hosting roles within broadcasting for all kinds of sporting events.

Together, these courses help students gain an understanding of gaming culture and modern media practices. The certificate helps prepare students for roles in esports broadcasting, live event production, social media management, digital marketing, content creation and community engagement.

The skills taught in the program are also applicable to careers in traditional sports media and other digital communication fields.

“We’re excited to offer students a way to explore the world of esports while building practical skills for their future career,” said Dean Yun. “As opportunities expand beyond traditional journalism, graduates will be better prepared to succeed in emerging digital media roles.”

The Esports in Media Certificate program is offered through the Reynolds School of Journalism, a top-tier, nationally respected and fully accredited institution with more than 100 years of journalism leadership. Admissions are accepted on a rolling basis. For more information, visit .
