Dear Wolf Pack Family,

We are nearing the end of the spring semester and I wish you all luck on the final few days of courses!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a national observance dedicated to encourage mental well-being. It is an important reminder that we all have a role to play in supporting one another.

This Wednesday is our University’s Prep Day, a time for students to prepare for end-of-course projects and final exams. We recognize that our students balance academic responsibilities alongside many competing demands of daily life, and that managing these obligations can be challenging.

Simple practices such as taking a walk outdoors, having a conversation with a loved one, engaging in deep breathing exercises or practicing brief meditation can help restore focus and resilience.

If you are experiencing a more serious mental health concern, please remember that you do not have to navigate it alone. Reaching out to someone you trust or seeking professional support is an important and courageous step.

The University offers a range of services to support the well-being of our campus community. Students may access Counseling Services, the Downing Counseling Clinic, and the Student Health Center. Faculty and staff can find assistance through the Employee Assistance Program, and the University’s LiveWell Program provides additional tools and guidance to help all members of our community prioritize their well-being and connect with resources across campus. Counseling Services will remain open throughout the summer and are available to help anyone in need.

There are also a handful of events this week designed to provide you with a moment of relaxation, including;

  •  - Tuesday, May 5, from 12  to 3 p.m. at Howler Plaza located between the Pennington Student Achievement Center and Church Fine Arts
    This event, sponsored by University Counseling Services, the Dean of Students, Fitness and Recreational Sports and University Libraries, will include free ice cream, games, prizes, a photo booth and free scantrons.
  •  - Tuesday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 a.m. at the Joe Crowley Student Union
    This is an opportunity to recharge and get ready for the week ahead. The event will include bagels, coffee and stress-free activities.
  • - Wednesday, May 6, from 11 am. to 1 p.m. at the Mathewson IGT Knowledge Center Breezeway
    Come relax and recharge with our friendly therapy dogs. Hosted by Counseling Services and Student Services, this event gives participants the opportunity to de-stress, boost their moods and enjoy some furry companionship. Drop by, pet a pup, and leave with a smile.
  •  – Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Counseling Services Annex at the southwest corner of Great Basin Hall
    Open to all students, Let’s Talk is a first-come, first-served, drop-in service for students seeking brief, 15-20 minute conversations with Counseling Services staff. Let’s Talk is ideal for students with questions about mental health support, those seeking professional advice without ongoing sessions, addressing specific problems and exploring options and offering help and ideas to support friends in need.

When we prioritize mental well-being and encourage others to do the same, we uplift the entire Wolf Pack. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we commit to building a community where everyone feels seen, supported and valued.

Go Pack!

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
