Engineering postdoc wins first place at UNR Postdoc Poster Symposium

Civil engineering postdoctoral researcher Chenqiang Liu received first place in the 夜色视频 Postdoc Poster Symposium for his presentation, “A Data-Driven Framework for Signal Retiming and Performance Evaluation on Coordinated Corridors.”

The event took place Oct. 27 on the University campus. Now in its second year, the Postdoc Poster Symposium is organized by the Graduate School and carries a $1,500 first-place prize.

Liu’s poster presentation was on transportation engineering, specifically traffic signal timing.

“Traffic signal timing needs to be updated to accommodate changing traffic conditions,” Liu said. “However, conventional signal retiming often requires labor-intensive traffic data collection, and evaluating corridor performance using multiple measures can be challenging.

“This research presents a data-driven framework that integrates traffic signal timing data, field observations and vehicle trajectory data to support signal retiming and performance evaluation,” Liu added. “The framework incorporates the Corridor Synchronization Performance Index (CSPI) to assess traffic progression and uses vehicle trajectories overlaid on time–space diagrams (TSD) to identify traffic operational issues and visualize corridor performance. The goal is to improve traffic signal coordination and make corridor performance evaluation more efficient and intuitive for traffic engineers.
