Engineering Programs Inspiring the Community (EPIC) Lab
Are you a parent, scout leader or home school educator looking for engineering activities for your student or student group? Sign up them up for a free EPIC Lab, an on-campus workshop taught by 夜色视频 students.
The EPIC Lab offers exciting, hands-on lessons across a range of engineering topics designed to spark curiosity. Students will learn about one discipline of engineering and participate in two to three interactive learning opportunities during the EPIC Lab lesson.
Each EPIC Lab requires a minimum number of participants. If that number isn’t met, the lab will be cancelled at least five days in advance and registrants will be notified by email.

EPIC Labs for Teachers
All labs below are free, in-person, and held Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. (unless otherwise noted) at William N. Pennington Engineering Building (WPEB 240) (unless otherwise noted).
Teacher EPIC Lab: The Sweet Science of Materials
Date: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026
Time: 9 to 11 a.m.

Audience: K–12 teachers
In this professional-development EPIC Lab, teachers will explore materials science through the engaging example of candy glass. Participants will investigate how heating, cooling and processing can change a material’s structure and properties. Assistant Professor Jeremy Moon will provide insight into materials science and its applications in engineering, followed by a hands-on activity and an opportunity to learn more about materials research at the University. Teachers will leave with practical ideas for introducing materials engineering concepts in their own classrooms.
EPIC Labs for Students and Families
Elementary School EPIC Lab: Marshmallow Bridges
Date: Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026
Time: 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Location: 夜色视频, William Pennington Engineering Building (WPEB) 240
Audience: Elementary school students (grades 2-5, ages 7 to 11)
In this civil engineering lesson, students will build, test and improve their very own marshmallow bridge. They will leave this activity with a better understanding of how engineers make structures strong and safe!
Middle School EPIC Lab: Lego Factory
Date: Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026
Time: 9 to 11 a.m.

Audience: Middle school students (grades 6–8, ages 11 to 14)
In this industrial engineering lesson, students will run a LEGO “factory” and discover how engineers improve teamwork, speed and efficiency while reducing waste!

High School EPIC Lab: Glider Planes
Date: Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026
Time: 9 to 11 a.m.

Audience: High school students (grades 9-12, ages 14 to 17)
In this aerospace engineering lesson, students will explore the principles of flight by designing, building and testing their very own glider!
