Professor David Rondel's essay, "James and Roosevelt on Liberalism, Imperialism, and the Meaning of Strenuousness" was chosen as the winner of the Joseph L. Blau Prize, which is awarded annually by the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy to the author of the paper "that makes the most significant contribution to the history of American Philosophy from colonial times to the recent present". The prize is made possible by the estate of Professor Peter Hare.
Rondel's essay explores the meaning of different ideals of "strenuousness" found in the work of legendary Harvard philosopher William James and his former student, Theodore Roosevelt, and demonstrates how these different conceptions shed interesting light on the U.S. imperialism that Roosevelt championed and James detested.
David Rondel is professor and chair in the Department of Philosophy.
