Planning and flexibility are key to success. New political science and international affairs majors should schedule an advising appointment with a department faculty advisor.
Advisors help students plan their curriculum and provide information on courses and department opportunities. All incoming freshmen and sophomores should meet with an undergraduate advisor for initial advisement.
Advisors in the College of Liberal Arts
There are two types of academic advisors in the College of Liberal Arts: College Advisors and Faculty Advisors. Both types of advisors can assist you with your academic progress in different ways and you are able to meet with both types of advisors.
The College advisors, located in the College of Liberal Arts Student Center, provide year-round support for all liberal arts students. They assist with:
New student orientation (freshmen and transfer students)
Major changes within the University
Degree requirements, including Silver Core and minor options
Academic probation support
Graduation planning
General advising or exploring liberal arts majors/minors
Advising during winter and summer breaks
Faculty advisors provide department-specific guidance and mentorship. They can assist with:
Major/minor course planning and substitutions

Internship opportunities
Students should meet with faculty advisors regularly, especially after their first year.
