This innovative program prepares students to become state-certified elementary teachers for grades K-8. Students choose an area of specialization that prepares them to be highly effective in today's diverse classrooms and that makes them eligible for an additional license or endorsement after graduation. It’s well-documented across the country that numerous factors have contributed to a strong need for dually certified educators who can teach all students, including English-language learners and those with disabilities, in one classroom. The integrated elementary program specifically addresses this need.
The College of Education has a number of amazing resources available to students to purse their education careers. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is the College’s dedicated library full of children’s books and other materials designed for curriculum enrichment, lesson enhancement and professional development. The library also has an extensive collection of juvenile books to enhance lessons and presentations. In addition, the library houses the art room - a self-use facility that offers students a full complement of equipment, such as laminators, poster printers and a lettering machine, for producing education materials. In addition, the College of Education has a dedicated computer lab with all the latest software just for education majors to use.
The area of emphasis prepares students for a variety of careers such as administrators of child development or family services programs, child development specialists, school age program coordinators and more.
Special Education trains undergraduate teachers in working with students with a variety of disabilities. Prepare to be a special educator or disability specialist or to earn endorsements in new areas of specialization. This is a high demand position with most districts, which makes it highly marketable.
English language acquisition and development is essential to learning, multidimensional in nature, and influenced by linguistic, psychological, and sociocultural factors.
