The secondary education program offers students a strong liberal arts education with emphasis in the particular academic discipline in which the student will be teaching. The Secondary Education program leads to a bachelor's degree in the College of Education and Human Development. Students have the option of combining this with a degree in their content area-sometimes requiring no increase in the total credits required.
Please note: Our teacher licensure programs prepare students for a Nevada teacher's license, which is available only to persons holding U.S. citizenship or a valid work permit/green card. International students not meeting this requirement may earn any of our degrees but are not eligible for a Nevada teaching license. International students are urged to work closely with their academic advisors to ensure their programs meet their professional goals.
The PackTeach program is a dual degree program that prepares students to become licensed secondary education teachers. This four-year program offers students the opportunity to gain a strong liberal arts education, excellent preparation in their content area discipline, as well as the foundational and applied knowledge for instruction.
Graduating from NevadaTeach provides you with all of the coursework to pursue a teaching license at the middle or high school level, while earning a comprehensive and marketable degree in your STEM discipline.
The College of Education & Human Development offers a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education degree with a major in physical education. Graduates must complete a semester-long internship to meet state licensure.
The Special Education minor is offered to undergraduates majoring in Secondary Education and/or pursuing a teaching license in secondary education, or as additional credits upon completion of the requirements for an undergraduate degree in an established discipline. The courses in the Special Education minor are required for the Nevada Special Education Generalist Teaching License.
The Post Baccalaureate Program in Secondary Education Teacher Licensure enables students who have completed an undergraduate degree in a field other than education to become licensed to teach in Nevada. Before applying to the Post Baccalaureate Program in Secondary Education Teacher Licensure, students should consult the Secondary Masters First-Time Licensure manual to determine which option is most appropriate. Some or all of the graduate credits earned in the Post Baccalaureate Program in Secondary Education Teacher Licensure may be transferred into a Secondary M.Ed. Program should the student decide to apply to such a program at a later date.
