Students in the human development and family science (HDFS) degree program study theory and conduct research in a variety of supervised field experiences. Students will investigate the ways in which individuals interact within the family system and with the larger socioeconomic environment, as well as the process of biosocial, psychosocial and cognitive development across the lifespan.
The HDFS undergraduate major provides a foundation for students interested in working with individuals and families. HDFS graduates are in demand in community settings, businesses and organizations for their knowledge of family and group dynamics, as well as their skills in program development and training. Graduates also have an excellent foundation for additional training in teaching, school counseling, marital and family counseling, social work, family law and occupational therapy.
The minor in human development and family studies (HDFS) can give students an advantage in a chosen career by helping them understand human development and issues related to individuals, families and communities.
Graduates of our Human Development and Family Science bachelor's degree programs interested in teaching children birth through second-grade may pursue this post-baccalaureate program to obtain coursework towards the Nevada teaching licensure in this area. Students are engaged in learning through advanced courses in curriculum, instruction and assessment.
The program prepares students for a variety of careers such as:
Through HDFS approved coursework or a national exam, students may earn certification in the practice of family science or the Certified Family Life Education (CFLE) credential.
