Working in the Makerspace
Welcome to the Innevation Center Makerspace! If you are new to using the Makerspace, this is your ultimate guide to getting started with us.
What is a maker?
Everyone is a maker in some way, shape or form. Makers are people who want to create something – from innovators to small business owners, DIYers, artists, hobbyists and everyone in between.
At the Makerspace, members can transform their ideas into real projects with access to advanced equipment and support from knowledgeable staff.
Makerspace equipment and training
Safety badges
The Makerspace uses a website called Fabman to keep track of the equipment you’ve been trained on. Makerspace users are invited to make a Fabman account which they can use to book equipment that they have completed safety training for following completion of the general safety quiz.
Makerspace staff
In the Makerspace, you’ll find our friendly student staff, ready to assist with all your Maker needs. Each staff member is trained on our equipment and can help you get started on your project. Their goal is to ensure you feel confident and comfortable using the tools and technology available. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or request assistance — our team is here to help!
3D printing
3D printing services are available to everyone in the community. To begin a print, you’ll need an STL file and an idea of the material you’d like to use. The Makerspace offers a wide variety of materials, including PETG, ABS, TPU, Standard Resin and Tough Resin.
You can start your print by emailing your file to makerspace@unr.edu or by visiting the Makerspace to discuss your project with our staff. Our team will help you choose the best printing option for your model. After your file is prepared for printing, you’ll receive an invoice covering material costs, printer time, and post-processing. With your approval, the print will begin, and once it’s complete, you’ll receive an email notification when it’s ready for pickup.
Makerspace Training
To use equipment in the Makerspace, you must first complete the General Safety Quiz. Once finished, your Safety Certification will be added to your Fabman account. Additional training is required for each piece of equipment (except hand tools) and can be scheduled with a staff member.
The Makerspace provides a variety of personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, noise-canceling earmuffs, hair ties, and more, to help keep you safe while using equipment. Each machine also has a manual and safety sheet with additional information and proper operating procedures.
