To provide a quick reference for common questions, we've compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions. This page covers everything from appointments and insurance to general services and policies to help you navigate your care.
Appointments and visits
While walk-in appointments are accommodated as availability permits, it is best to make an appointment. SHC appointments can be made online or over the phone. To make a same day or same week appointment at the SHC, call (775) 784-6598 or use the Appointments tab after logging in to your Patient Portal.
The is available through the Student Health Center’s homepage. It provides a convenient and secure way to:
- Complete required forms online
- Schedule or manage appointments
- Receive messages from healthcare providers, including updates on appointments and test results
- View and print financial statements (this will also act as a students’ proof of visit)
The portal is your go-to hub for managing your health care on campus—anytime, anywhere.
Patients should bring their Wolf Card as well as a list of current medications with them to their SHC appointment.
The UNR Student Health Center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). This demonstrates that the UNR Student Health Center has met rigorous nationally recognized standards and is committed to providing the highest quality of care to our students. The Student Health Center is staffed by a dedicated team of licensed healthcare professionals.
Medical
We provide treatment for illnesses and injuries, sports medicine, eating disorder treatment and nutritional consults, psychiatry services, immunizations, wellness screenings, health education, and more. Please see our services page for more information.
At the Student Health Center, we are committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all patient information. All medical records and personal health information are handled in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Information will not be disclosed to anyone; parents, faculty, or others without the patient’s explicit written consent, except in cases where disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect the patient or others from imminent harm.
The Student Health Center provides a wide range of immunizations, including those required for enrollment. Some travel immunizations are available, however some may require referral to a specialty clinic
The SHC provides a wide variety of sexual health services to support our patients. We offer a variety of contraception options as well as consultation with a provider. We do not place IUDs or implantable devices but can remove them for patients. We offer both testing and treatment for STIs. To make an appointment or assess possible additional costs, call or schedule online. The SHC also offers a Free STI Testing Clinic Monday through Thursday during the fall and spring semesters. Call the front desk to assess Free STI hours and availability. We offer free pregnancy testing for our patients as well as offering colposcopies and pap smears. We also offer PrEP and PEP consultation and prescription for patients. Call to schedule an appointment.
To ensure safe and appropriate care, the Student Health Center does not prescribe medication for ADHD without verified documentation of a formal diagnosis. Required documentation must include psychological testing and evidence of functional impairment consistent with ADHD diagnostic criteria. Following submission of this documentation, students will undergo an evaluation with our psychiatric team to determine whether medication is clinically appropriate. Prescriptions are issued at the discretion of our providers based on a comprehensive assessment.
Once a patient has established care with the SHC, most prescribed medications can be refilled with an appointment, based upon provider discretion and consultation with the patient. Prescriptions for controlled substances cannot be refilled.
Yes, students who have been evaluated and tested by an allergist and are receiving allergy shots can continue to receive these injections at the SHC for a low additional cost. However, the Student Health Center does not do allergy testing or provide the allergy serum.
Billing
By paying the Student Health Fee every semester, students have access to services at the SHC including unlimited primary care office visits free of cost. The SHC provides no and low-cost healthcare services for students. Some additional services like laboratory, imaging, immunizations, procedures, and specialty visits may have a nominal fee associated. Please call the front desk if you have a question about pricing or if you want a quote for a service at the SHC.
The Student Health Center does not bill outside health insurance, with the exception of the plan offered by the University for graduate, medical and international students.
Other
Yes, outside private health insurance is still necessary for students to keep even though they have access to the SHC. Things like emergencies, urgent care, medications, specialists, and extensive testing may still be needed for a patient with access to the SHC as the facility functions as a primary care doctor’s office. Please take a picture of your health insurance card and keep it on your phone for when you need it. The SHC’s referral specialist will utilize your health insurance information when assessing access to outside facilities.
No, the Student Health Center does not provide notes for missed classes. Patients can print a copy of their visit encounter through the Patient Portal to be used as a proof of visit. Please review the Medical Excuse policy.
All enrolled students who have paid their health fee have access to the Student Health Center. Faculty and staff can also be seen on a fee for service basis.
Requesting copies of medical records is quick and easy! Simply complete a Medical Records Request Form (available online, at the front desk, or through the Patient Portal).
